November 2019 Update

An update on CBS activity during November

1. Social Media

We’d like to introduce Nikki Milovanovic (nmilovanovic@wavelengthgroup.com) who heads up Social Media at Wavelength Communications, our CBS Communications agency.

In addition to leading social strategy, she is also developing the CBS blogs, and is actively looking for stories that will engage the Surgical community across our social media channels (@UKSurgeons).

Sharing your views with your own networks on the subjects posted by @UKSurgeons helps raise awareness to the issues that matter to Surgeons across the UK. Feel free to email Nikki directly for any tips on how to do this on various social media platforms.

CBS is very keen to hear different viewpoints, so we encourage you to forward any ideas you think will appeal to Surgeons, or indeed to future Surgeons.

2. How to be a Consultant Surgeon Meeting

As you may be aware, we recently organised a meeting entitled “How to be a Consultant Surgeon”. This was done because feedback from many sources suggested this would be popular amongst senior trainees and young consultants. The programme looked very good and was specifically designed to address those issues that often cause anxiety to recently appointed consultants. Sadly, however, the meeting has had to be cancelled as the number of registrants was so small.

On learning this one of our Founding Fellows, Patrick Magennis wrote:

"Let’s not abandon the idea, let’s franchise it.  A smaller evening event or series of events, with the same ideas but delivered for CBS by local faculty with a video link from yourself.  I can give it a go here in Liverpool, other Foundation fellows could be asked to do the same on their patch. Invite trainees of all levels and medical students."

We think this is a great idea and have contacted all Founding Fellows to gauge their interest in hosting such an event. We have had some very encouraging feedback and hope to be able to support a number of events over the coming months. If you are interested in hosting or attending an event, please contact Helen to register your interest.

3. Surgeon as an Expert Witness

John MacFie has put together a response in respect of the RCS launch of a guidance document The Surgeon as an Expert Witness. Please read John’s response on the CBS website and social media (@UKSurgeons) and share any views you may have on this matter.

4. Help to grow the Confederation of British Surgery

We are very keen to expand our CBS audience and therefore encourage you to share any links and contacts you have to prospective groups of members with Helen, who can contact them directly and hopefully grow our mailing list and membership numbers. Ballards have been very helpful with advice around GDPR and how to manage mailing lists so we are confident of being compliant with personal data.

5. Membership via Sponsorship Route

We have had a reasonable take up of the 50% refund on CBS Founding Fellow Membership offer that the FSSA had put in place, and currently have a number of allocations still available, particularly some of the smaller Specialty Associations. Applications can be made via the CBS website Membership page.
